As I know from my experience as a hotel receptionist, lot’s of guests travel through Switzerland and often only have one day in one city – so the question is rising: What to see in Zurich in one day?
I have wrapped up 5 possible things to do in this amazing city and get the most out of one day in Zurich.
Start your day with a visit of the Kunsthaus Zürich for arts and culture
The Kunsthaus Zürich, located in the center of the Old Town offers an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, and exhibits from various artistic periods. Whether you like classic masterpieces or contemporary art, the museum has something for everyone. Plus, with its convenient location and welcoming atmosphere, it’s the perfect destination for both art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. It opens Tuesday until Sunday from 10 am and the tickets are about CHF 24,- per adult.
Take a walk through the Old Town of Zürich
If there is one place to visit in Zürich, it’s for sure the Old Town, also called Altstadt in German. After you have enjoyed the art and culture, you are already in the Old Town part of the city. Walk along cobblestone streets lined with medieval buildings and charming shops and boutiques. Don’t miss the famous Grossmünster and Fraumünster churches, which offer insight into Zürich’s rich history and architecture. Be sure to grab a coffee and pastry from a local café to fuel your morning adventure.
Enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Zürich
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city with a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Zürich. All tours start at “Bürkliplatz” which isn’t far from the Old Town you’ve already visited before. Enjoy the stunning views of the city skyline and surrounding mountains from a cruise boat. Most ships have a restaurant where you can enjoy a cool drink or a little snack.
There are different types of cruises available, roundtrips, shorter and longer cruises. Tickets can be bought at the service point directly at Bürkliplatz.
My recommendation: In case you want to visit the “Lindt Home of Chocolate” you can also get off at the boat station Kilchberg (make sure your roundtrip will stop there and check times). Then visit the chocolate muesum and later finish your boat trip back to Zürich. Get a ticket for the Lindt museum online before as it is very popular. Enjoy the Swiss Cuisine at a local restaurant
Zürich’s culinary scene has something to satisfy everyone. But why would you eat Italian Pizza or a Burger when you have the chance to try Swiss Cheese Fondue, Raclette or other local specialties?! Don’t forget to pair your meal with a glass of Swiss wine or beer for the ultimate dining experience.

End your day with a sunset view from Uetliberg
The Uetliberg, is Zürich’s very own (and only) mountain at 870 m over sea level. Take a hike or hop on the train (S 10 from Zürich HB – Uetliberg) to reach this exciting place, where you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the city, over Lake Zürich and with good weather conditions even the Black Forest in Germany. Arrive just in time for sunset to witness the sky glowing in vibrant colors as the city lights begin to twinkle below. It’s a magical moment you won’t forget.
There is a restaurant/hotel on the mountain top, the Uto Kulm, where you can get a drink and/or a snack to enjoy it even more.
Some practical tips to make your one day Zürich even better
Before starting your one day Zürich adventure, be sure to plan your route using the city’s efficient public transportation system. Tip: Get the SBB Mobile App. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather, as you’ll be doing plenty of walking and outdoor exploration. Most importantly, take in the spirit of adventure and immerse yourself in all that Zürich has to offer.
